The only thing I know for sure right now is that connection and community will help us all endure these challenging times.
I’ve been thinking a lot about what it means to stand with our community in moments of crisis. At this very moment – nonprofits all over the world are facing and impossible reality. Local nonprofits—the ones who know their communities best—will be hit hardest and quickest.
The abrupt halt to U.S. foreign assistance means hospitals are running out of supplies. Schools are closing. Urgently needed humanitarian work is grinding to a halt. These cuts jeopardize lives.
We are still collecting data and stories, but so far, more than half of GlobalGiving’s nonprofit partners from whom we’ve heard are impacted. Organizations that have spent years building trust and delivering essential services are suddenly being forced to shut down. And with funding frozen, there’s no time to find alternatives.
This is bigger than one policy decision. It’s a massive shift that will have lasting consequences for civil society, human rights, and democracy. And it puts even more pressure on local organizations that are already doing so much with so little.
Here’s another thing I know for sure: The best solutions always come from those closest to the challenges.
For over 20 years, GlobalGiving has worked to ensure grassroots organizations have direct, flexible funding—the kind that allows them to adapt, to keep their doors open, and to continue serving their communities no matter what.
